XtremeGuard Screen Protector review
I am a huge advocate for using screen protection on tech-gear. I cannot remember the last time I did not use one on any of my devices, from my MacBook Air to my Suunto Elemental Terra watch. Dorky as it sounds, when a good deal on protectors hits the Net, I buy them for friends and family who ‘need’ them on their smartphone, tablet, or laptop. I know how AR that sounds, but I think of it as doing a good deed for those who do not know better . As the story goes, XtremeGuard was having a 1-day sale on their entire line of military grade films, so I bought a handful to pass and try out.
Features:
- Shield-Heal Technology helps conceal and erase existing scratches on your device and can ‘heal’ itself from future abuse.
- 60 day satisfaction guarantee to set your mind at ease when looking to buy, couple that with the XtremePrices and choosing these protectors becomes a no brainer.
- Replace your bulky expensive case for an ultra-thin, highly durable full-body wrap which will provide a more sleek ‘factory finished’ look to your device.
- XtremeGuard’s protectors are not only virtually imperceptible, but they also create more grip so it’s easier to hold onto your device.
- XtremeGuard’s massive product line-up can cover virtually any device. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, let XtremeGuard know.
Unlike ZAGG, Crimson, or Skinomi, XtremeGuard’s packaging was minimalistic to say the least. The iPhone screen protectors literally came in a plain white envelope with a tiny cleaning cloth, small pieces of cardboard, and instruction card on how to make the installation solution and procedure. The iPad full body protectors came rolled up in the white cardboard tube pictured.
This business choice saves natural resources plus overall product and shipping costs, enabling XtremeGuard to price its films at a fraction of the cost of the competition.
Installation Procedure:
The XtremeGuard films are very similar to many of the ZAGG screen protectors I have reviewed in the past. It is very thin, extremely clear material which uses a liquid application process, and it takes a great deal of care and skill to install properly. I still receive negative commentary on my ZAGG reviews about the difficulty and hassle involved with applying them correctly. So be aware – many find it a pain and not worth the effort.
Quality:
Once installed the XtremeGuard screen protectors need approximately 24 hours to cure to the surface. During the ‘curing process’ the residue bubbles and liquid slowly disappear. The film is precision cut for the individual device and as soon as it is done curing, it’s crystal-clear. It offers solid protection from scrapes and scuffs, but definitely not drops or impacts.
Capturing how nice a screen protector actually looks is difficult. But I try to be brutally critical of these sort of things and to be honest, the XtremeGuard looks good and fits very good. Several of the folks I purchased them for attempted to install it themselves with less than ideal results, but I have installed dozens of this type of film over the years.
Bang for the Buck:
To be blunt, the only reason I purchased the XtremeGuard was price. Their 1-day sale was just to good to pass up….literally pennies on the dollar compared to other more well known, nearly identical films. Having never tried these protective film, there was some risk of wasting my money on an inferior product. Fortunately, that was not the case.
Even when XtremeGuard protectors are not on sale, they are a great overall value/bang for the buck. Other than packaging and presentation, they are nearly identical to ZAGG protectors in both their positive and potentially negative (installation) aspects. I have been very pleased with the results on those XtremeGuard films I have personally installed. I know some people have issues with this type of screen protector, but for those of you who regularly use them, XtremeGuard protectors are definitely worth considering.

BBK's Vivo X1 is a phone for audiophiles, packs high-end DAC and Beyerdynamic earphones
We've never paid much attention to BBK's phones in the past, but today, this Chinese company -- who's actually the creator of the Oppo brand for the Western market -- announced a rather interesting Android 4.1 device. The idea of this Vivo X1 is that BBK wants to take audio very seriously on its new flagship phone, which is why it's been given a Cirrus Logic CS4398 digital-analog converter plus a CS8422 sample-rate converter -- a combo that's seemingly popular amongst Hi-Fi connoisseurs and manufacturers. And to match that audio performance, BBK's also throwing in a pair of Beyerdynamic MMX 71 iE earphones (20Hz-22kHz, 12Ω, 104dB) as part of the ¥2,498 ($400) package; though you can also choose the AKG K420 or the Sennheiser CX215 instead when buying from BBK's official online store.
The rest of the Vivo X1, however, is more bog-standard in comparison: MediaTek MT6577T processor (1.2GHz, dual core, Cortex-A9), 4.7-inch 960 x 540 IPS display, 1GB RAM, 16GB built-in storage, eight-megapixel main camera, 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera and WCDMA 2100 3G radio. The only real highlight here is perhaps the 2,000mAh battery, which is non-removable but still rather impressive considering it's in a 6.55mm-thin body. Even the Oppo Finder has a 6.65mm thickness and yet lacks a 3.5mm headphone jack, whereas BBK's thinner phone has one. What's missing here is microSD expansion, but there's 15GB of Baidu cloud storage should users wish to take advantage of that.
The Vivo X1 may just be available for pre-order now, but the folks at BBK couldn't help but tease the highlights of its next-generation device already: bezel-free design, 1080p display, big battery and 13-megapixel camera. We look forward to that.

HTC's Peter Chou dismisses talk of $6-8 per-phone payment to Apple
Since HTC and Apple settled their patent disputes and agreed to a cross-licensing agreement, there's been plenty of speculation as to exactly what this deal entails. One figure floating around the blogosphere last week was $6-8 per phone -- an estimated amount that at least one analyst thinks HTC might be paying Apple.
However HTC CEO Peter Chou was quick to rubbish this particular number at a recent public appearance in Tokyo. According to reports from Reuters, when asked directly, Chou dismissed the figure as "outrageous," while saying he is "happy" with the way the settlement worked out.
"I think that these estimates are baseless and very, very wrong. It is a outrageous number, but I'm not going to comment anything on a specific number. I believe we have a very, very happy settlement and a good ending."
The exact details of the settlement and cross-licensing agreement remain confidential, although rival manufacturer Samsung is working through the courts to reveal the exact amounts involved. It's widely speculated that at least some money is going in Cupertino's direction.
For its part, HTC's only official comment on the specifics of the agreement has been to say it doesn't expect it to have any "adverse material impact" on the company's financials.

New iPad Smart Covers
At the release of the iPad 2, Apple also brought out its Smart Cover product, which quickly became a favorite. Although the new iPad 3 is a little thicker through the middle than the iPad 2 (due to a bigger battery), it is still compatible with the previous Smart Covers that are currently for sale. This is excellent news as the Smart Cover not only protects the iPad screen from scratches and scrapes but is also functional and practical, and a stylish choice.
The Smart Cover uses magnets within the iPad to align it perfectly to the iPad. Third party cases can sometimes be a bit of a struggle to line up on the iPad – sometimes the case slips and the home button is not easily accessible, or it can be a struggle to fit the charger lead into the socket. So the magnetized Smart Cover is a welcome change.
The Smart Cover can automatically wake the device when the cover is opened, meaning users no longer need to hit the home button or power button to access the iPad. This is just a small and simple feature but incredibly useful.
The Smart Cover is also capable of supporting the iPad in a standing position so that you can easily view movies and videos. The cover simply folds behind the iPad to prop it up. This is also very useful for FaceTime and Skype sessions. The cover can also be folded at a different angle to prop up the unit to make typing easier. This can be especially helpful if you are composing a long email or document.
There are two material choices with the Smart Cover, and a whole range of colors to choose from. For bright vibrant colors, the obvious choice is the polyurethane cover, available in black, gray, pink, green and blue. There is also a traditional leather cover which comes in brown, black, gray, white and red. Both of the materials are lined with microfiber which works to remove smudges and fingermarks from the screen when the cover is closed, as well of course as keeping it safe from scratches.
No matter your personal preference in terms of color and material, the Smart Cover cannot be beaten on functionality and usefulness. Many cases for the iPad can be quite bulky and add a significant amount of weight and bulk to the device. However the Smart Cover is slim and sleek while still giving protection. In addition, the extra features make it a great and stylish choice for any new iPad owner, or a great gift choice for the iPad owner in your family!
