Twitpic introduces video support, lets you tweet your vids

twitpic video
Twitpic, the Twitter photo-posting service, has now extended its reach into photos that move, also known as "video". Users will now be able to upload quick videos shot on the move, and share them directly with Twitter.

Twitter's Web interface currently only shows a thumbnail of the video, but Twitpic says it's working on embedding the actual video into Twitter. Right now it basically looks like a link, not much different than posting a simple YouTube link.

One difference between Twitpic video support and plain old YouTube however, is that users are able to e-mail their videos in, rather than just uploading them from the site. Once applications using Twitpic start integrating this new functionality, users will be able to upload video right from within their favorite Twitter client, on the go.

While this sort of functionality has been attempted before by 12seconds, we can only hope Twitpic's video space endeavor meets with better luck.

Google updates search to massively bias original content

Google updates searchGoogle has just made a change to its search engine that noticeably impacts 12% of all queries. Yet again, it is aimed at reducing the prevalence of non-original content farm content in search results. It also heavily biases sites with "original content and information such as research, in-depth reports, thoughtful analysis," increasing their chance of being at the top. This only affects google.com at the moment, but it will be rolled out to other domains in due course.

Last month Google publicised its first anti-content farm maneuver -- and while that only affected 2% of queries, we still noticed a significant increase of traffic here on Download Squad. Then, just a couple of weeks ago, Google launched the Personal Blocklist, an extension that lets you filter out content farms from your search results.

With today's massive alteration of Google's search algorithm, it really could mean the difference between life and death for ad-supported sites that produce original content. A quick look at our logs from last night suggest that it could be a very big boost indeed.

It should be noted that the results from the Personal Blocklist haven't been used yet -- but apparently, Google's search changes filter out 84% of the sites that users have been blocking with the extension; a sure sign that Google has hit the nail on the head.

People Upgrade Cellphones Every 18 Months On Average [Datapoint]

An interesting consumer spending stat: People upgrade their phones once every 18 months now, up from 16. That's a curious number, possibly averaging out people who upgrade yearly with people who only upgrade when their cellphone contract runs out. Otherwise, I can't see that the majority of folks feel like they need to pay early upgrade fees to get the latest stuff—especially when you're talking about the mainstream, non-tech folks. Google's Native Client updates to Pepper API, looks set to fragment the Web

Native Client (NaCl), Google's attempt at bridging the gap between pure JavaScript Web apps and installed programs, creeps ever closer to a stable release, and ultimate inclusion in other browsers, including Firefox. The plug-in, which allows the browser to safely execute native compiled code, has retired its NPAPI interface in favor of Pepper (PPAPI), and now has a much-improved SDK.

NaCl, as a concept, is awesome. It allows for untrusted code to be executed natively, which is perfect for processor-intensive tasks like games and data analysis. The ultimate goal is to have NaCl modules that you can plug into a website, just like JavaScript is used at the moment -- a physics module, a maths module, a graphics module. JavaScript would still manage the easier bits, while NaCl would be leveraged for meatier tasks.

Ultimately, however, NaCl could cause immeasurable damage to the Open Web paradigm. NaCl is an open source project, but it still brings the same risks of fragmentation as Flash, Silverlight and Java applets. As it stands, only Chrome supports the Pepper interface that NaCl requires -- and with IE9 and Firefox 4 only weeks away from release, it would be a long time until support for the plug-in could improve.

If NaCl gains enough traction, Chrome could become the next IE6...

Apple tests anti-jailbreak code in iBooks, new PwnageTool circumvents it

Apple, it seems, may be trying out some anti-jailbreak code in its iBooks e-book reader app. The app intentionally tries to run an some unsigned executable code every time you try to open a book -- and if it runs, iBooks knows the device is jailbroken and refuses to open your e-books.

Fortunately (or unfortunately for Apple), the iPhone Dev-Team has released a new version of the PwnageTool jailbreak that incorporates the Chronic Dev Team's 'feedface' iOS 4.2.1 untether and circumvents Apple's crippling code.

Apple's intentional hijacking of iBooks is an interesting move, but given its less-than-amiable stance on jailbreaking it's surprising that it's taken this long to actually implement anti-jailbreak mechanisms -- especially after removing the infamous jailbreak API back in December. It now becomes a question of when Apple will insert similar measures into other iOS apps -- and whether they will be a whole lot more destructive than merely blocking e-books. The Age of Bricking may be upon us!

windows phone 7 update
If you've been waiting patiently for your Windows Phone 7 device to get copy and paste support, bad news: you're still going to be waiting after you install the update Microsoft is pushing today. The first Windows Phone 7 update brings changes which will pave the way for future updates -- by improving the way the operating system handles updates.

And don't forget, for now you need the Zune desktop app for Windows or the Windows Phone 7 connector app for Mac to install updates on your WP7 phone. Perhaps one of the improvements being shipped is support for OTA updates...

The Fundamental Problem With Shower Faucets [Humor]

Obviously, there are better ways to design a shower knob than this (i.e. MAKE IT DIGITAL). But still, those of us who practice good hygene and don't blow our noses in $100 bills can relate to the daily struggle of trying to find the perfect water temperature in the shower. Last Call For Chrome's URL Bar? [Unconfirmed]

One of the Chrome browser's most prominent features may also be one of its most short-lived: according to Conceivably Tech, the search giant is looking into four different layouts, each with its own type of navigation. One of the lead contenders, the Compact style, ditches the URL bar in favor of just one line to house navigation buttons, a search button, tabs and menus. [Conceivably Tech] More »
