Obama vs. Romney go app vs. app on iPhone

Obama vs. Romney go app vs. app on iPhone

The U.S. presidential election is going mobile, with both Democratic President Barak Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney fielding iPhone apps this week to inform their respective bases and, dare we hope, the greater electorate. They're two very different apps from two very different parties and candidates, so let's take a look at them both...

The Democrat's app is Obama for America, and focuses on campaign messaging.

We’re building this campaign from the ground up, and the Obama 2012 app has all the tools you need to join the fight to move the country forward:

The Republican's app is Mitt's VP, and focuses on who'll be chosen as running mate. (And is also available for Android.)

It’s a question everyone’s asking: who will be Mitt Romney’s VP? There’s no telling when that answer might come. But when it does, be the first to find out and access exclusive content with the Mitt’s VP app.

Now I'm Canadian, where we have 238 parties, a non-elected senate, and no direct way to choose the leader of our country (the majority leader runs the place), so I have no candidate in this race. Still, I'm happy to see something as important as a national election embracing technology and mobile, and understanding the importance of reaching out to the type of people who use apps, read iMore and Mobile Nations, and regardless of political leanings, will help shape the future.

So whether you're passionate or pragmatic, you country is getting ready to call on your vote, so here's hoping everyone downloads both apps (and all apps associated with the campaigns), carefully scrutinizes both candidates across the full range of issues, and makes whatever Hobson's choice they ultimately feel is best for them and for America. (Aside from drafting Tim Cook, of course...)

Go get 'em.

FreedomPop's $99 WiMax iPod touch case promises an iPhone without the bills (video)

Freedompop

FreedomPop's free-"4G"-for-all plans are clearer now that it's started taking pre-orders on its $99 iPod touch sleeve. The free data allocation has been halved to 500MB, with each additional gigabyte costing $10, with the company offering bulk discounts to heavy users. Marketing VP Tony Miller also told TechCrunch that the iPod sleeve wasn't a high priority until public clamor forced a shift in its plans, but said that an Android-compliant version of its gear was "on the roadmap." There's video after the jump.

iOS 5.1 Upgrade Details

iOS 5.1The latest Apple operating system, iOS 5.1, to hit devices is pre-supplied with the new iPad. the new Os has been designed to fix a few bugs that were previously identified with iPads and iPhones, and also beings better battery life and WiFi connectivity. There are also a host of brand new features which are available on the new iPad 3.

The Camera App

The new camera is a massive upgrade on the iPad 2 and is something that many users will be attracted by specifically. Not only the camera hardware but also the new camera app itself has been redesigned with a view to allowing buyers to make the most of the massive 5MP camera and the new iPad’s revolutionary Retina display.

With iOS 5.1 there is also a change to the way the face detection works. This feature previously was only able to focus on one face per picture, which was perfect for individual portraits but not so good for group shots. It’s now possible to detest many faces in one photo, so group shots will be much easier to set up and the photographer can concentrate on composing the image instead of messing about with the settings.

Improved Photo Stream

A great new improvement under iOS 5.1 is the enhancements to the Photo Stream. Prior to this edition, users could not delete individual photos from the Photo Stream, which meant that if you were going to use it, you had to accept that along with your perfectly composed shots you would also get a bunch of blurry images and accidental photos of your feet. This really was a ridiculous oversight and put many people off using the Photo Stream service completely.

However with iOS 5.1 users can now individually select photos for sharing with Photo Stream and discard the remainder, rather than having to reset the whole stream of 1000 pictures every time.

Improved User Experience

iOS 5.1 brings with it a host of other updates which bring an enhanced user experience to the iPad. Sound quality has been greatly improved, meaning watching videos and movies and listening to music on the new iPad will be a more enjoyable experience.

Playback speed can now be controlled on each video, and a 30 second rewind function has been implemented. The Safari browser has some enhancements to its bookmark functionality, too.

And finally (and importantly for those who are using their iPad on the move and need to download and sync large files) the bandwidth limit has been raised – instead of the maximum 20mb download size previously you will now be able to download up to 50mb.

In conclusion, the new iOS 5.1 brings several important improvements and enhancements to the new iPad 3, but the OS features alone will not be reason enough for most people to consider upgrading to the new iPad 3.

“This shark, swallow you whole.”

Ask any movie buff to list their ten favorite movies, and chances are Jaws will be in there somewhere along with Star Wars.  And while there’s been no shortage of movie tie-ins for the latter, aside from some t-shirts and a very awesome action figure, the Jaws fan doesn’t have many opportunities to flaunt the shark swag.  However, that shortcoming is now a thing of the past thanks to ThinkGeek.  As a follow up to the popular April Fools gag turned actual product the Tauntaun sleeping bag, there is now the “Chumbuddy” sleeping bag.

Part stuffed animal, part sleeping bag, the shark measures 7 feet long with an internal cavity length a little over six feet–big enough for even taller adults.  And while you’re terrifying the kiddies with the idea of being swallowed by a shark, why not also harass the pets?  ThinkGeek also actually carries a very similar pet bed version.  I kinda love the morbid humor of ThinkGeek at times.

The Chumbuddy is available for $200 and the pet beds range from $70-$90.

Scrabble Helper helps you improve your Words With Friends gameplay

scrabblehelper
If you play Scrabble (or a scrabble-like game) from time to time, you may want to check out Scrabble Helper. This simple website is a godsend when you're at a loss for words. Simply enter whatever letters you have, and the word you'd like to connect with. Scrabble helper comes up with a whole bunch of suggestions sorted by score.

The site lets you select one of five dictionaries - Scrabble International/US, Lexulous International/US, and Words With Friends. Some people might say this constitutes cheating -- I think if the other side knows you're doing it, it's definitely not cheating. And it doesn't take the challenge out of the game, because implementing Scrabble Helper's suggestions and deciding which words you'd like to connect with still takes a fair bit of thought.

Very handy, though perhaps not one for the Scrabble puritans in the crowd.

AVG launches LiveKive cloud sync and backup tool

avg livekive dropbox
A while back, we told you about AVG's new LiveKive service, a new cloud synchronization and backup tool which appears to have been named after a vat in which mash is made during the brewing process. But enough about AVG's odd choice of monikers -- LiveKive has launched and is now ready to accept your files into the AVG cloud.

LiveKive takes aim at services like Dropbox and SugarSync, though at the moment it's lagging behind in terms of features. As it stands, LiveKive is only compatible with Windows and OS X. There are no mobile clients yet, though with AVG's strong presence on Android we wouldn't be surprised to see an app arrive in the near future.

The company is offering a heck of a deal right now, however. If you sign up for a paid account during the launch phase, you can score unlimited storage for $80 for a whole year. You can't even score 50GB per year at that price from Dropbox, so if cost and space are more important to you than cross-platform availability, LiveKive might be worth checking out.

If you're not interested in ponying up any cash at the moment, you can still get a 5GB account free of charge. Just head on over, and create a LiveKive account.

TomTom launches new iPhone hands-free car kit with improved audio quality

TomTom launches a new iPhone hands-free car kit with improved audio quality

TomTom has just announced the new TomTom Hands Free Car Kit for the iPhone, which claims to offer the highest audio quality ever for loud and clear hands-free calls. The new car kit comes in two flavors, one specifically for the iPhone and another for phones with a micro USB connection.

The TomTom Hands Free Car Kit also features some advanced noise cancellation technologies, which dramatically reduce background noise for the caller and ambient noise for the driver, and comes with a detachable microphone that can be placed in the best position for optimal voice detection.

"The new Car Kit has been designed for safety and convenience." said Corinne Vigreux, Managing Director Consumer at TomTom. "With fantastic audio quality and new mounting options, we are making it easier and safer for drivers to make calls and use navigation applications on the move. With advanced new features, our aim is to help drivers keep their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road."

You can either be attach the new TomTom Hands Free Car Kit to a windscreen or to the dashboard of your vehicle. To fit it onto the dashboard, you would need to install a self-adhesive disc first. Since it features an expandable swiveling cradle, you can use your iPhone with the TomTom Hands Free Car Kit with or without a case, and in either horizontal or vertical views.

The new TomTom Hands Free Car Kit is available in Europe right now and will cost around £80 ($125). TomTom also plans to offer a package with the hands-free kit and a copy of the Western Europe TomTom app for around £130 ($204).

I have tried many of these easy-to-install hands-free car kits but never had any great success when driving at higher speeds. The ambient noise is always too much of a problem so it will be interesting to see if TomTom has managed to improve that experience. I currently use a Parrot hands-free system wired into my car stereo, which works very well but is a pain when you change your car.

Too much Tweeting apparently causing issues with Olympic TV coverage

Android Central

So, the 2012 Olympic Games are well underway in London. One of the first events the British public had been looking forward to, was the Mens Cycling Road Race. There was massive hopes for Gold for the home team, and fans turned out in their droves along with the millions watching on TV. Anyone who did watch the race on the TV though may have been cursing the apparent lack of information about the race. The problem, apparently, was Twitter.

OK, not just Twitter, but overloading of the data networks apparently restricted information being received from the riders GPS units. Hundreds of thousands of people all in a relatively small area using mobile data to tweet at and about their heroes. And, many no doubt will have been using the BBC Olympics application to watch the live TV coverage while waiting for the riders to hit their part of the route. Sounds crazy, but it prompted a statement from an IOC spokesperson, urging fans to restrict their mobile use around the Olympic events.

Of course, if you want to send something, we are not going to say 'Don't, you can't do it', and we would certainly never prevent people," he said. "It's just - if it's not an urgent, urgent one, please kind of take it easy.

The 2012 games are the first in history to be surrounded by modern social media and smartphones. More and more we rely upon mobile devices to communicate with the world, without any real knowledge of potential consequences such as this. At previous Olympics, fans haven't had the access to the stars through services such as Twitter and Facebook, or the countless number of apps that keep them in touch with the action 24/7.

Though on the other hand, the billions of pounds that have been spent on the Olympics should really have been able to avoid such an issue before it arose. The mobile operators and infrastructure companies claimed before hand to be able to cope, so what went wrong? Vodafone and O2 claim not to have seen any network disruptions around the Olympic venues, yet the issue apparently stems to over-subscriptions on one particular network.

We think, that whatever the issue is, another solution will need to be found. Can fans really be expected to keep their phones in their pockets?
