Jelly Bean makes a surprise appearance on Vodafone's Samsung Galaxy S III LTE

Blink and you might have missed it -- we almost did. It's Android Jelly Bean (4.1.1), running on a German Samsung Galaxy S III LTE -- what seems to be a plum colored model, to be exact. It's not the first time we've seen it in some official form, but playing with the handset on display at Vodafone's IFA booth certainly made the inevitability of the upgrade all that much more real. Using the handset next to one running ICS, the differences in the buttery smoothness weren't too apparent, though the OS certainly felt quick. Video evidence after the break.

Intel Connects With IDT to Power Up Wireless Charging

Intel has signed up IDT to develop an integrated transmitter and receiver chipset for the former's wireless charging technology. It will use magnet resonance technology that could enable a computer to power a device wirelessly -- just set the device down near the PC, and it starts charging. Intel and IDT will deliver validated reference designs for deployment in Ultrabooks, all-in-one PCs, smartphones and standalone chargers. The technology may also be used in keyboards, mice, storage devices, cameras and smartphones, stated Gary Huang, director of PC growth and innovation at Intel.

Words With Friends for Android updated, promises "smoother game experience"

wordswithfriends
As several of you noted in the comments to our post asking for cross-platform iOS/Android games, Words With Friends for Android does not provide the smoothest gaming experience... and that's being rather charitable.

You might be happy to hear that a couple of days ago Zynga released an update which promises to solve many of the Android-specific issues, such as notifications not popping up.

Sadly, installing the update is not a smooth experience; you have to manually uninstall the previous version, and then go to the Android Market and install it. What's nice is that it doesn't lose your saved games - this screenshot shows a game I've started before the update and continued after updating.

How's the new update working out for you? Let us know in the comments!

Distro Issue 55: a cautionary tale of the state-supported 38 Studios

Distro Issue 55 the cautionary tale of 38 Studios and state investments

In 2004, Curt Schilling and a badly injured ankle led the Red Sox to their first World Series championship in 86 years. That's right, he was the ace that helped break the "Curse of the Bambino" from the mound. Fast forward to 2010, where Schilling had hung up his cleats and lobbied for Rhode Island officials to give his video game outfit, 38 Studios, a $75 million loan guarantee. Just two years later, the studio filed for Chapter 7, leaving the state's taxpayers holding the tab. In this week's issue, Jason Hidalgo takes a look at what went down in New England and examines the risk of public funds being used to support private tech companies. We had folks on the ground in Berlin to monitor the happenings at IFA this week and a few notable gadgets from said event occupy "Hands-on". As far as full-on reviews go, we put the Archos 101 XS, Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE and Acer Aspire V5 through their paces. "Forum" is chock full of even more reads, eSports commentator John Sargent stops by for the Q&A, "Time Machines" kicks it old school and "Eyes-on" takes on 35mm, retro-style photography. The week is over, so hit the link that you fancy the most to grab your copy and let the relaxation begin.

ARCHOS Announces the GamePad Gaming Tablet

I want to see a show of hands… who remembers the Tapwave Zodiac Palm OS PDA? Back in 2003 it was a very cool device that merged a  PDA with built in gaming controls. The new GamePad from ARCHOS reminds me a little bit of the Zodiac because it offers a full set of analog gaming buttons. I love my iPad, but playing action games really would benefit from a physical joystick. I’ve tried a few of the stick on solutions, which do improve things a little, but it’s still not the same as dedicated buttons. The GamePad features a 7-inch, capacitive screen, a dual-core 1.5 GHz processor, Mali 400mp quad-core Graphics Processor, physical control buttons and analog sticks. I’m not finding any info on how much memory it has and if the controls will work with all games, or only those specially designed to use them. The GamePad will be available at the end of October for less than 150€ ($188).

Why You Might Want to Preorder Your iPhone 5 Early [Apple]

All signs point to the fact that Sharp is one of the manufacturers of the next iPhone display. In fact, the phone might even use Sharp's new IGZO technology. But if Wall Street Journal's reports that Sharp has halted production of the displays due to problems are true, you might wanna be among the first to preorder the iPhone 5 (or next iPhone, or iPhone 6, or whatever), as supply could be short when it first releases. Ask DLS: What's your primary Web browser?

Competition is a good thing, and the browser arena has been a fierce arena for years now. There are at least four "major" browsers each vying for your attention, along with lots of smaller spin-offs (SRWare Iron or Flock, anyone?).

While the browser usage charts we share from time to time show overall browser usage amongst the Web at large, Download Squad readers are not exactly the average bunch in terms of browser use. So today we have one simple question for you:

What's your primary Web browser?

GeoPalz – Pedometers for Kids

To promote physical fitness and as another tool to help fight childhood obesity, GeoPalz is pairing their kid styled pedometers with an online rewards based gaming website. Through the online arcade, users (5-10yrs old) can report their steps walked, which are logged through their pedometers and exchange steps for time with games such as Avalanche, Snow-Drift, Mega-Mash and Final-Ninja. 1000 steps will earn you 1.5 minutes of game play. 10,000 steps get you 15 minutes. There are currently 20 different games and 26 different pedometers, which are priced at $25 each. I think rewards based pedometer programs are great. We have this at Cummins. We earn points for the steps we take, which earn us good old cash :) I’ve already earned $100 for the year and have the chance to earn another $100.

Full press release after the jump.

Fitness-Focused GeoPalz Launches Online Arcade

New online arcade rewards physically active children with access to exclusive online games and media

(BOULDER, COLORADO – August 29, 2012) – GeoPalz, the first decorative pedometer for kids, introduces an interactive media and gaming arcade to its website, designed to promote physical fitness through reward-based online gaming. Within the GeoPalz website, users will now be able to exchange their steps walked for play time in the arcade.

With nearly 20 games currently online, the arcade will cater to children ages five to 10 and feature popular games such as Snow-Drift, Mega-Mash, Final-Ninja, Avalanche and more. By purchasing a GeoPalz activity tracker, kids can track daily steps and exchange them for minutes of play in the online gaming arcade. Currently, 1,000 steps earn users one-and-a-half minutes of arcade play. Kids who reach their average daily goal of 10,000 steps will earn 15 minutes of arcade time, per day.

“At GeoPalz, we believe that properly incenting and rewarding our children for their physical activity will help them build healthy habits for the future,” said Rich Schmelzer, CEO of GeoPalz, LLC. “By expanding our rewards beyond physical toys and virtual goods, we are able to motivate the growing number of young gamers to also get outdoors and get active!”

The GeoPalz activity tracker sits on a child’s hip or shoe and comes in several kid-friendly designs in various character groups, such as “Sports,” “Rock,” “Fantasy,” “Cutesy,” “Edgy” and popular “SkelanimalsTM.” With GeoPalz, children are encouraged to “walk to win.” The activity tracker measures the child’s steps, which can then be entered online at the GeoPalz online community to redeem for a variety of prizes or time in the online arcade.

GeoPalz activity trackers are $25 retail and are available in more than 250 retailers nationwide and also on the GeoPalz website. You can find a store near you, or purchase online at www.geopalz.com/store.

Android 4.0 now available for LG Optimus 2X... in South Korea, anyway

Ice Cream Sandwich now available for LG Optimus 2X in South Korea, anyway

Once upon a time, the LG Optimus 2X was a big deal. After all, it introduced the masses to the NVIDIA Tegra 2. Following nearly a year of neglect, this handset -- supposedly built for enthusiasts -- is now eligible for an update to Android 4.0. Unfortunately, the software isn't yet available globally, and only those in South Korea can get in on the action. If that weren't discouraging enough, LG Canada remains insistent that it won't ever distribute Ice Cream Sandwich for the Optimus 2X. Whoever still owns this handset, ever get the feeling that you deserve better?

Every Phone Should Have This Windows Phone 8 Childproofing Feature [Windows Phone 8]

Kids these days just can't keep their grubby hands off smartphones and tablets. Once they see the big shiny screen, it's over. Boogers wiped on your home button, drool trail on the display—it ain't pretty. But what's worse is if they accidentally tap into your phone's personal information: private pictures, salacious text messages, big giant curse words and other awful adult things you do during your alone time. That's why every phone should have this upcoming feature in Windows Phone 8: Kid's Corner. More »
